Taking on an apprentice

We're thinking of taking on an apprentice, but what age apprentice do we choose? A school leaver and send them through college or a mature apprentice?

The reason we have this dilemma is that we need to find are people who aren't full of opinions, misconceived items and genuinely want to work and learn. I feel for the youth of today who need a break and chance at life, but also the men and women who through no fault of their own been made redundant and need to support their families.

Where would your target audience be and why?

For the benifit of your business, you need to employ a youth....
he will be inexpensive, useful (after a while) and wont run off two weeks later after what he has learned from you to set himself up as your compertition.....
thats a little defeatest.....but i am sure you get the point?

or maybe I am just feeling a little blue on the subject...... you decide!

after having my son TOM work for me for the last two years from 16-18 i would deffo go with a youth as well Dave, for the same reasons as above, they are keener to learn and don,t let you down ,its only human nature to better yourself and adults are just doing that!! it take awile for the penny to drop in the young-uns !!lol

If you have a construction college near by go and ask the lecturer who their best student is, it might be either?

That's a fair point Lee. I have had that happen in the past and always felt a little guarded around recruits as I could tell they would be off. I tested a few out with a written agreement stating they couldn't set up within two years of leaving my company, they all refused so that said it all for me.

I'll look into the colleges and see if I can interview a few of them.

Hi Dave i have had 5 apprentices all went to NCN Basford, none with me know and only 1 still tiling its a hard to get the right lad that wants to learn a trade and not just hold his hand out on Friday, i would speak to John Chambers ( Charlie) at NCN he is very helpfull wish you luck.
