the title of tiler

when i started tiling, there was no such trade as a tiler,it was just part of a wet-trade ,i trained to become a plasterer and was told it was part of our trade,and it did come up as part of my apprenticeship the same as lots of other things we learned about,and never used,anyway i think its a bit of a boring title, so can you guys think of a more imaginative /impressive title for us all to call ourselves , as i think it is a great stand alone TRADE on its own now with all the things we need to know and understand !! i will start the ball rolling TILE MASON something NEW that WE CAN DISTANCE ourselves from the tile butchers there are out there then we could have a membership of skilled individuals, members only !!

I like tile mason, it implies craftsman and I think that tiling is definitely a craft.

i'am saying when i was a youngster ,there where no tilers as a separate trade, tiling on site was done by and was part of the trades of bricklayers/plasterers as all tiles were set in mortar

Anybody else been to see these the Cosmati floor in Westminster Abbey? That was laid in 1268, there's also a floor laid in the English style from around the same time I think

BAL started manufacturing adhesive in 1966.

I think a lot of the old skills and crafts, and the art, has been lost thanks to commercial interests taking over. In other words - too much emphasis placed on materials and choice.

Bang -on Mark, the materials suppliers, have set-about making us all reliant on them,and the more they do that the better for them,i would go as far as saying a lot of it is BS and providing you follow your trade/skill the job will be fine, but hay that is capitalism

Crack on guys, mix up some sand/cement mortar see how far you can get fixing some porcelain onto plasterboard stud walls....there is method behind it all

yes but Gaz when we fixed with mortar ,there was no plasterboard as British gypsum had not made it lol and most walls would have been solid,

there has deffo been progress !, but also a lot of sale hype-to boot :-D from all maker's of any building materials

A lot of the innovations mean there is thousands of square metres of tiles being laid that just couldn't of been laid years a go and a lot more people earning money because of them.

If you look at the floor tiling market alone the growth in my 17 years in the industry is unbelievable and a lot of that is down to great products
