Recolouring mouldy grout

does any one know if you can recolour mouldy grout? Got a customer who wants to sell her house but one of the showers has grout that's completely mouldy must have used a cheap grout with no anti-mould agent in it. Do you have to do anything first with the mould? Have recoloured grout before buts it's always been before the grout has gone mouldy any help would be great!

@tt In the past I've either scrubbed the grout with TSP (tri sodium phosphate) diluted in warm water or by using a dry steam cleaner, best to hire a professional machine.

I have personally used TSP many times in the past, it is certainly a very versatile effective cleaner, but I now believe their are better safer formulations to use for the not so knowledgable experienced user.

With respect Dave, for an expert in your field this is fine to use.

Obviously I'm going to say that I am bias, but I think most would agree it's better to use branded formulas.

We could all make adhesives with sand, cement and polymer additives that would work but it's not a BAL adhesive.

TSP is not recommended for cleaning in bathrooms...

TSP can cause staining to metals such as shower doors, chromed drains and plumbing fixtures, and can also etch the glazing on ceramic tile if left in contact too long. It can also attack the grout... it is an ingredient in products used to remove dried grout from tile surfaces in new installations.

If you think the TSP is going to perform a miracle on your tile grout that you can't accomplish with regular cleansers, bleaches, and scum removers, you will be disappointed and possibly make the situation worse.

Why not try Universeal Mould Spray or Grout Restorer then once clean & dry recolour with Grout Rescue - Colour & Seal.

The grout restorer is a great product, used it at my house.....just dont be a muppet like me and do it in your shorts!

No I've only quoted to do the job waiting to hear back from the customer. Looked in to mould sprays and quoted to use HG's mould spray as it meant to kill mould algae and something else I can't remember now! Will let you know how I get on with it when and if I do it!
